Pharmacological Class
Antihistamine + sympathomimetic.
Generic Name
Dexchlorpheniramine tannate 2.5 mg, pseudoephedrine tannate 75 mg; per 5 mL; strawberry-banana flavor; alcohol-free susp.
Indications
Rhinorrhea and congestion.
Children
<2 years: not recommended. 2–6 years: 2.5–5 mL every 12 hours. 6–12 years: 5–10 mL every 12 hours.
Adults
10–20 mL every 12 hours.
Contraindications
Severe hypertension or coronary artery disease. Narrow angle glaucoma. Asthma. GI or urinary obstruction. During or within 14 days of MAOIs.
Precautions
Hypertension. Ischemic heart disease. Hyperthyroidism. Diabetes. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs. β-blockers may increase the pressor effects of sympathomimetics. Potentiates alcohol, other CNS depressants, anticholinergics. Antagonizes guanethidine, other antihypertensives. Caution with sympathomimetics.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, anticholinergic effects, GI upset, dizziness, nervousness, anxiety, headache, weakness, insomnia, GU disturbances, thickening of bronchial secretions, hypotension, respiratory depression or difficulty, palpitation, excitation in children.
