Pharmacological Class
Antitussive + sympathomimetic + antihistamine.
Generic Name
Hydrocodone bitartrate 2.5mg, phenylephrine HCl 5mg, dexbrompheniramine maleate 1mg; per 5mL; liq; grape flavor; alcohol-free.
Indications
Cough, congestion, allergic rhinitis.
Children
<6yrs: not recommended. ≥6yrs: 5mL every 4–6hrs; max 20mL/day.
Adults
10mL every 4–6hrs; max 40mL/day.
Contraindications
During or within 14 days of MAOIs. Severe coronary artery disease or hypertension. Ventricular tachycardia. Pheochromocytoma. Narrow angle glaucoma. Not for treating lower respiratory disorders (eg, asthma). GI or GU obstruction. Neonates. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Precautions
Head injury. Increased intracranial pressure. Hypertension. Cardiovascular disease. Diabetes. Lower respiratory disorders. Labor & delivery. Elderly. Debilitated. Drug abusers.
Interactions
Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs (see Contraindications). β-blockers may increase the effects of sympathomimetics. Potentiates alcohol, other CNS depressants. Antagonizes antihypertensives. Paralytic ileus with anticholinergics.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, dizziness, other CNS effects, palpitations, GI effects, anticholinergic effects (eg, dry mouth, urinary retention); respiratory depression (overdosage).
