Indications
Rhinorrhea and congestion.
Children
<6 years: not recommended. ≥6 years: 1 tab every 4 hours; max 4 doses/day.
Adults
1–2 tabs every 4 hours; max 4 doses/day.
Contraindications
During or within 14 days of MAOIs. Concomitant ergotamines: not recommended. Uncontrolled hypertension. Cardiac disease. Renal or hepatic dysfunction. Bronchospasm. Glaucoma. Diabetes. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Precautions
Hypertension. Arrhythmias. GI or GU obstruction. Hyperthyroidism. History of bronchospasm. High environmental temperatures. Elderly. Labor & delivery. Young children.
Interactions
Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs. β-blockers may increase the pressor effects of sympathomimetics. Alcohol, other CNS depressants potentiated. Arrhythmias with digoxin. Guanethidine, other antihypertensives antagonized. Separate dosing of ketoconazole, antacids or adsorbent antidiarrheals by 2–3 hours.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, anticholinergic effects, GI upset, dizziness, anxiety, weakness, insomnia, thickening of bronchial secretions, hypertension, hypotension, excitability in children, respiratory depression or difficulty, palpitations.
