Pharmacological Class
Analgesic + antihistamine+ antitussive+ sympathomimetic.
Generic Name
Acetaminophen 160mg, chlorpheniramine maleate 1mg, dextromethorphan HBr 5mg, phenylephrine HCl 2.5mg; per 5mL; liq; red grape flavor; alcohol-free; contains sodium 2mg/5mL.
Indications
Nasal congestion, cough, pain, sore throat, fever.
Children
<2yrs: do not use. 2–5yrs: individualize. 6–11yrs: 10mL. Repeat every 4 hours as needed; max 5 doses/24hrs.
Adults
20mL every 4 hours; max 5 doses/24hrs.
Contraindications
Children <2yrs old. Within 14 days of MAOIs. Concomitant other acetaminophen products.
Precautions
Liver disease. Cardiovascular disease. Hypertension. Thyroid disease. Diabetes. GI or GU obstruction. Glaucoma. Asthma. Lower respiratory disorders.
Interactions
See Contraindications. Increased risk of liver damage with ≥3 alcoholic drinks/day. Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs. β-blockers may increase the pressor effects of sympathomimetics. Other CNS depressants potentiated. Antihypertensives antagonized.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, anticholinergic effects, nervousness, dizziness, insomnia, excitability in children.
