Pharmacological Class
Sympathomimetic + antihistamine + antitussive.
Generic Name
Phenylephrine HCl 10mg, pyrilamine maleate 16mg, dextromethorphan HBr 15mg; chew scored-tabs; grape-flavored; dye-free.
Indications
Rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, cough.
Children
<6yrs: not recommended. 6–11yrs: ½–1 tab every 12 hours.
Adults
1–2 tabs every 12 hours.
Contraindications
Within 14 days of MAOIs. Severe hypertension. Peripheral vascular insufficiency. Asthma. Lower respiratory disorders.
Precautions
Hypertension. Cardiovascular disease. Hyperthyroidism. Diabetes. Narrow-angle glaucoma. Peptic ulcer. GI or GU obstruction. Atopic children. Elderly. Debilitated. Labor & delivery. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs. Additive CNS effects with alcohol, other CNS depressants.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, anticholinergic effects, GI effects, nervousness, dizziness, insomnia, excitability in children.
