Pharmacological Class

Generic Name
Triamcinolone acetonide 75 micrograms/inh; metered dose inhaler.
Indications
Maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy. Asthma requiring systemic corticosteroid therapy, to reduce need for systemic corticosteroids.
Children
<6 years: not recommended. 6–12 years: 1–2 inh 3–4 times daily, or 2–4 inh twice daily; max 12 inh/day. Rinse mouth after use.
Adults
2 inh 3–4 times daily, or 4 inh twice daily; max 16 inh/day. Severe asthma: initially 12–16 inh/day. Rinse mouth after use.
Contraindications
Not for primary treatment of acute attack.
Precautions
Infections. If exposed to measles or chickenpox, consider anti-infective prophylactic therapy. If adrenal insufficiency exists following systemic corticosteroid therapy, replacement with inhaled corticosteroids may exacerbate symptoms of adrenal insufficiency (eg, lassitude). Monitor for growth suppression in children. Monitor for hypercorticism and HPA axis suppression (if occur discontinue gradually). Transferring from systemic corticosteroids: see literature. If needed, may use aerosol bronchodilator first. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions
Hoarseness, dry mouth and throat, wheezing, cough, oral candidiasis, facial edema.
