Indications
Pain management when an opioid analgesic is appropriate for more than a few days.
Children
Not recommended.
Adults
Swallow whole. Individualize. See literature.
Contraindications
Severe respiratory depression. Asthma. Paralytic ileus.
Precautions
Head injury. Increased intracranial pressure. Acute abdomen. Shock. Impaired renal, hepatic, thyroid, pulmonary, or adrenocortical function. GI or GU obstruction. Biliary tract surgery. Kyphoscoliosis. Acute pancreatitis. Convulsive disorders. Delirium tremens. Drug abusers. Elderly. Debilitated. Pregnancy (Cat C.). Labor & delivery, nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Potentiation with alcohol, CNS depressants. Do not use within 14 days of MAOIs. Severe hypotension with phenothiazines.
Adverse Reactions
High abuse potential, sedation, drowsiness, GI upset, constipation, urinary retention, respiratory depression, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, dysphoria, euphoria.
