Indications
Moderate to severe pain.
Children
Not recommended.
Adults
Individualize and periodically reevaluate dose. Usual: 5–30mg every 4 hrs as needed. Terminal illness: may give on fixed dosing schedule. Caps can be sprinkled on food or contents mixed with fluid (see literature).
Contraindications
Impaired respiration. Asthma. Paralytic ileus.
Precautions
Head injury. Increased intracranial pressure. Acute abdomen. Shock. Impaired renal, hepatic, thyroid, pulmonary, or adrenocortical function. GI or GU obstruction. Drug abusers. Debilitated. Biliary tract surgery. Kyphoscoliosis. Acute pancreatitis. Convulsive disorders. Delirium tremens. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Labor & delivery, nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Potentiation with alcohol, CNS depressants. Do not use within 14 days of MAOIs. Severe hypotension with phenothiazines. Potentiates neuromuscular blockers.
Adverse Reactions
Sedation, drowsiness, GI upset, constipation, urinary retention, respiratory depression, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, dysphoria, euphoria.
