Indications
Moderate to severe pain.
Children
Under 2 yrs: not recommended. 2–12 yrs: 2–6micrograms/kg every 4–8 hrs, depending on clinical response.
Adults
0.3mg by deep IM or slow IV at up to 6 hr intervals as needed. May repeat once, 30–60 minutes after initial dose.
Precautions
Impaired respiratory, renal, hepatic, thyroid, adrenocortical or biliary tract function. Head injury. Increased intracranial pressure. CNS depression or coma. Toxic psychoses. Urethral stricture. Acute alcoholism. Delirium tremens. Kyphoscoliosis. Potentially hazardous activity. Drug abusers. Children. Elderly. Debilitated. Labor and delivery. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Potentiation with alcohol, other CNS depressants, general anesthetics, phenothiazines, MAOIs. Respiratory, cardiac collapse possible with diazepam. May precipitate withdrawal in opioid-dependent persons.
Adverse Reactions
Sedation, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, miosis, headache, diaphoresis, hypoventilation, respiratory or CNS depression.
