Indications
Moderate to severe menopausal vasomotor symptoms not improved by estrogens alone.
Children
Not applicable.
Adults
0.625mg or 1.25mg of estrogens daily, given cyclically (3 wks on, 1 wk off). Discontinue or taper dosage every 3–6 months.
Contraindications
Breast or estrogen-dependent carcinoma. Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding. Thromboembolic disorders. Thrombophlebitis. Hepatic dysfunction. Pregnancy (Cat.X). Nursing mothers.
Precautions
Cardiovascular disease. Renal dysfunction. Gallbladder disease. Bone disease associated with hypercalcemia. Depression. Do initial complete physical and repeat every 6–12 months (include BP, PAP smear, mammogram). Monitor blood, hepatic function, and for virilization. Discontinue if jaundice, hypertension, hypercalcemia, or edema occurs.
Interactions
May potentiate oral anticoagulants and insulin.
Adverse Reactions
Peliosis hepatis, nausea, breakthrough bleeding, edema, weight changes, mastalgia, hypertension, depression, intolerance to contact lenses, hair loss or hirsutism, changes in libido, virilization, jaundice, polycythemia. Increased risk of endometrial carcinoma, gallbladder disease, thromboembolic disorders, hepatic tumors.
