Estrogen.
Generic Name
Estradiol 0.025mg/day, 0.0375mg/day, 0.05mg/day, 0.075 mg/day, 0.1mg/day; transdermal patch.
Indications
Moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause. Vulval and vaginal atrophy. Hypoestrogenism.

Not applicable.
Adults
Apply 1 patch twice weekly to a clean, dry area of the buttocks, femoral triangle, or upper arm (avoid breasts, waistline). With intact uterus: usually give cyclically (3 weeks on, 1 week off, with an oral progestin). Without uterus: may give continuously. Rotate application sites (allow 1 week between application to a site). Reevaluate periodically.
Contraindications
Breast or estrogen-dependent neoplasia. Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding. Thromboembolic disorders. Thrombophlebitis. Pregnancy (Cat.X).
Precautions
Women with an intact uterus: add a progestin. Cardiovascular risk. Familial hyperlipoproteinemia. Conditions aggravated by fluid retention. Hypercoagulability. Bone disease associated with hypercalcemia. Monitor diabetics. Hepatic dysfunction. Do initial complete physical and repeat annually (include BP, mammogram, and PAP smear). Discontinue if jaundice or depression occurs. Uterine bleeding. Mastodynia. May interfere with lab tests. Nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions
See literature. Increased risk of endometrial or other estrogen-dependent neoplasia, gallbladder disease, cardiovascular disease. Increased BP, hypercalcemia, local irritation, breakthrough bleeding, mastodynia, GI effects, chloasma, intolerance to contact lenses, headache, dizziness, weight changes, edema.
