Generic Name
Dextrose 5g, sodium 12mEq, potassium 5mEq, chloride 10mEq, citrate 7mEq, Calories 22; per 8oz after mixing; contains phenylalanine; pwd; unflavored, bubble-gum, or grape flavor.
Indications
Oral fluid and electrolyte replacement in mild to moderate diarrhea and vomiting.
Children
Under 2 yrs: see literature. 2–6 yrs: Mix contents of 1 packet in 8oz water. Give 8oz every 3–4 hours while diarrhea continues (1–2 quarts/day).
Contraindications
As sole therapy in severe continuing diarrhea. Intractable vomiting. Adynamic ileus. Intestinal obstruction or perforated bowel. Anuria, oliguria, or impaired homeostatic mechanism.
Precautions
Phenylketonuria.
