Prophylaxis and treatment of acute gouty arthritis attacks. |

Acute: 0.6–1.2mg at first sign of attack, then 0.6mg every hour or 1.2mg every 2 hrs or 0.6mg every 2–3 hrs until pain relief, GI discomfort or diarrhea occurs; stop short of diarrheal dose (discontinue if nausea, vomiting or diarrhea occurs). Wait 3 days before retreatment. Prophylaxis: <1 attack per year: 0.6mg per day for 3–4 days per week. >1 attack per year: 0.6mg daily. Severe cases: 1.2–1.8mg daily. Prophylaxis before surgery: 0.6mg three times daily for 3 days before and 3 days after procedure. |

Severe GI, renal, hepatic, or cardiac disease. Blood dyscrasias. |
| Precautions |
|
May adversely affect spermatogenesis. GI, renal, hepatic, cardiac, or hematological disorders. Monitor blood counts in long-term therapy. Elderly. Debilitated. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers. |
| Interactions |
|
Antagonized by acidifying agents. Potentiated by alkalinizing agents. Potentiates sympathomimetics, CNS depressants. May cause false (+) RBC or hemoglobin in urine. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
Bone marrow depression, blood dyscrasias, peripheral neuritis, purpura, myopathy, alopecia, reversible azoospermia, GI disturbances, dermatoses. |
