Indications
Susceptible infections, including respiratory, otitis media, urinary tract, skin and skin structure.
Children
Under 9 months: twice daily dosing not recommended. Over 9 months: 25–50mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses. Otitis media: 75–100mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses. Max 4g/day.
Adults
250–500mg every 6 hours; max 4g/day.
Precautions
Penicillin or other allergy. Discontinue if colitis occurs and treat. Renal dysfunction, reduce dose. GI disease (esp. colitis). Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Increased nephrotoxicity with loop diuretics, probenecid, aminoglycosides, others. Potentiated by probenecid. May cause false (+) glucose test with Clinitest.
Adverse Reactions
Anaphylaxis, diarrhea, rash, blood dyscrasias.
