Indications
Susceptible infections, including otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; uncomplicated UTIs and cervical or urethral gonorrhea.
Children
<6 months: not recommended. <50kg and 6 months–12yrs: 8mg/kg once daily or 4mg/kg every 12 hrs. >50kg or >12yrs: use adult dose. Renal impairment: CrCl 21–59mL/min: reduce dose by ¼; CrCl<20mL/min or dialysis: reduce dose by ½.
Adults
400mg once daily or 200mg every 12 hrs. Gonorrhea: 400mg once. Renal impairment: CrCl 21–59mL/min: reduce dose by ¼; CrCl<20mL/min or dialysis: reduce dose by ½.
Precautions
Penicillin or other allergy. Renal impairment. History of GI disease. Labor and delivery. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
May potentiate carbamazepine, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) (monitor). May cause false (+) Clinitest, direct Coomb's, nitroprusside test for ketones. Potentiated by probenecid.
Adverse Reactions
GI upset, rash, drug fever, pruritus, headache, dizziness, transient renal and hepatic effects, seizures.
