Susceptible infections. |

<2 months: only as an adjunct in congenital toxoplasmosis. ≥2 months: initially ½ of 24-hour dose. Maintenance: 150mg/kg per day divided into 4–6 doses; max 6g/day. |

| Contraindications |
|
3rd trimester pregnancy. Infants. Nursing mothers of ill, stressed, G6PD-deficient, premature, or hyperbilirubinemic infants. |
| Precautions |
|
Not for group A β-hemolytic strep. Discontinue if rash occurs. Hepatic or renal dysfunction. Allergy. Asthma. G6PD deficiency. Diabetes. Maintain adequate hydration. Monitor CBC, urine, and renal function. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers. |
| Interactions |
|
Potentiates oral anticoagulants (monitor PT), sulfonylureas, methotrexate, thiopental, phenytoin. Antagonized by PABA. May form insoluble precipitate with methenamine metabolites. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
GI upset, rash (may be serious, e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), photosensitivity, depression, convulsions, ataxia, lupus-like syndrome, peripheral neuritis, blood dyscrasias, hemolysis, megaloblastic anemia, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity with crystalluria, pancreatitis, pseudomembranous colitis. |
