| Indications |
|
Susceptible bacterial septicemia, lower respiratory or urinary tract, skin and skin structure, meningitis, bone and joint, intraabdominal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uncomplicated gonorrhea. |
| Children |
|
<6 months: not recommended. 6 months–12 years: 50mg/kg every 6–8 hours. Usual max 200mg/kg/day. |
| Adults |
|
Use IV route for serious infections. Usually 1–2g every 8–12 hours. Severe or refractory: 1g every 8 hours or 2g every 8–12 hours. PID: 2g IV every 8 hours. Life-threatening: 3–4g IV every 8 hours. Gonorrhea: 1g IM once. |
| Precautions |
|
Penicillin or other allergy. Renal impairment, reduce dose; see literature. Monitor renal function. GI disease (esp. colitis). Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers. |
| Interactions |
|
Avoid concomitant furosemide, ethacrynic acid, other nephrotoxic drugs. Concomitant aminoglycosides may potentiate nephrotoxicity. May cause false (+) Clinitest. Potentiated by probenecid. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
Rash, pruritus, drug fever, local reactions, anaphylaxis, blood dyscrasias, elevated liver enzymes. |
