Indications
Susceptible bacterial infections including acute sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure, complicated intra-abdominal infections.
Children
<18yrs: not recommended.
Adults
≥18yrs: 400mg once daily. Sinusitis: treat for 10 days. Bronchitis: treat for 5 days. Pneumonia: treat for 7–14 days. Skin and skin structure: treat for 7 days, if complicated: 7–21 days. Intra-abdominal: treat for 5–14 days; use IV form first. IV form: infuse over 60 minutes.
Precautions
Severe hepatic impairment: not recommended. Do not exceed recommended dose or infusion rate. Discontinue if tendon pain, inflammation, or rupture occurs; or if allergic reaction or CNS events occur. Prolonged QT interval. Hypokalemia. Proarrhythmic conditions (eg, bradycardia, acute myocardial ischemia). CNS disorders (eg, seizures). Maintain adequate hydration. Avoid excessive sun or UV light. Pregnancy (Cat.C), nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Do not use with Class IA (eg, quinidine, procainamide) or Class III (eg, amiodarone, sotalol) antiarrhythmics; caution with erythromycin, antipsychotics, tricyclics, cisapride, others that cause QT prolongation or lower seizure threshold. Oral forms: take at least 4 hours before or 8 hours after iron, zinc, magnesium, aluminum, sucralfate, didanosine (buffered forms). Monitor warfarin. Concomitant NSAIDs may increase seizure risk.
Adverse Reactions
GI upset, dizziness, headache, other CNS effects, abdominal pain, inj site reaction, taste perversion, abnormal liver function tests.
