Generic Name
Mumps virus vaccine live; for SC inj after reconstitution; contains gelatin, neomycin, human albumin; preservative-free.
Indications
Mumps immunization.
Adults and Children
<12 months: not recommended. Each dose is 0.5mL. Give by SC inj into upper outer arm. First dose at 12–15 months of age; revaccinate (may use MMR) at 4–6 years of age.
Contraindications
Defer in moderate or severe active respiratory or other febrile infection (may vaccinate if mild or minor illness). Active, untreated tuberculosis. Immunosuppressed. Blood dyscrasias. Bone marrow or lymphatic malignancy. Pregnancy (Cat.C) during; avoid pregnancy for 3 months after vaccination.
Precautions
Egg allergy. Thrombocytopenia. Defer vaccination for at least 3 months after blood or plasma transfusions or immune globulin, and for at least 1 month before or after other live virus vaccines (except Varivax and PedvaxHIB). Elderly. Nursing mothers.
Interactions
May get suboptimal response with immunosuppressants (eg, chemotherapy, high dose corticosteroids ≥2 weeks, radiation); consider deferring. May interfere with tuberculin test.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, syncope, vasculitis, pancreatitis, diabetes, thrombocytopenia, anaphylaxis, encephalitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, rash, orchitis, otitis media, optic neuritis.
