Japanese encephalitis vaccine.
Generic Name
Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine inactivated; pwd for SC inj after reconstitution; contains gelatin, formaldehyde, and rodent and neural proteins; preserved with thimerosal.
Indications
Japanese encephalitis immunization (see current CDC advisories for recommendations).
Adults and Children
<1yr: not recommended; 1–3yrs: each dose is 0.5mL SC; ≥7yrs: each dose is 1mL SC. Primary series: 3 doses on days 0, 7, and 30. Booster dose 2 years later.
Contraindications
Generalized urticaria or angioedema to a previous dose.
Precautions
Observe for 30 minutes after vaccination. Ensure access to medical care for 10 days after dose due to possible delay generalized urticaria. History of urticaria. Have epinephrine (1:1000) available. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Avoid excessive alcohol for 48 hours. Concomitant vaccines (see literature).
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions (eg, tenderness, edema), fever, headache, malaise, chills, GI upset, abdominal pain, urticaria, angioedema, wheezing.
