Pharmacological Class
Measles vaccine.
Generic Name
Measles virus vaccine live; for SC inj after reconstitution; contains gelatin, sorbitol, neomycin, human albumin; preservative-free.
Indications
Measles immunization.
Adults and Children
Each dose is 0.5mL. Give by SC inj into upper outer arm. <12 months: not recommended. 12months: first dose at 12–15 months of age; revaccinate (may use MMR) at 4–6 years of age.
Contraindications
Defer in moderate or severe active respiratory or other febrile infection (may vaccinate if mild or minor illness). Active, untreated tuberculosis. Immunosuppressed (see literature). Blood dyscrasias. Bone marrow or lymphatic malignancy. Pregnancy (Cat.C) during; avoid pregnancy for 3 months after vaccination.
Precautions
Egg allergy. Thrombocytopenia. History of cerebral injury or convulsions. Defer vaccination for at least 3 months after blood or plasma transfusions or immune globulin, and for at least 1 month before or after other live virus vaccines (except Varivax and PedvaxHIB). Have epinephrine (1:1000) available. Elderly. Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Immunosuppressants. May interfere with tuberculin test.
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions, fever, syncope, headache, malaise, panniculitis, vasculitis, GI upset, thrombocytopenia, respiratory disorders, rash, otitis media, optic neuritis; encephalitis (rare).
