Generic Name
Tetanus and reduced diphtheria toxoids, acellular pertussis vaccine (aluminum phosphate adsorbed); susp for IM inj.
Indications
Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis booster immunization in persons 11–64 years of age.
Adults and Children
<11yrs or ≥65yrs: not recommended. 11–64yrs (≥5yrs after last dose of tetanus toxoid, diphtheria toxoid, and/or pertussis-containing vaccine): 0.5mL IM once into deltoid muscle.
Contraindications
Encephalopathy within 7 days after previous DTaP or DTwP vaccination, or life-threatening reaction to related vaccine. Progressive neurologic disorders. Uncontrolled epilepsy. Progressive encephalopathy.
Precautions
Fever (≥105 F within 48hrs), persistent inconsolable crying (≥3hrs within 48hrs), shock (within 48hrs), seizures (within 3 days), or Guillain-Barre syndrome (within 6 weeks) after previous DTaP or DTwP vaccine: see literature. Stable CNS disorders. Seizure risk. Acute illness. Immunosuppressed. Bleeding disorders. Have epinephrine (1:1000) available. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Concomitant vaccines: see literature. Immunosuppressants: may get suboptimal results.
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions, headache, fever, fatigue, arthralgia, GI upset.
