|
Ocular inflammation with infection. |
| Adults and Children |
|
<6 years: not recommended. ≥6 years: 2 drops every 4 hours and at bedtime or small amount of ointment 3–4 times daily and 1–2 times at night. May prolong dosing interval as condition improves; max 20 mL or 8 g per therapeutic course. |

|
Ocular fungal, viral, or mycobacterial infections. |
| Precautions |
|
Corneal or scleral thinning. Glaucoma. Myopia. Diabetes. Purulent exudates may inactivate sulfonamides. Monitor for secondary infections and intraocular pressure in prolonged use. Avoid abrupt cessation. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers: not recommended. |

Incompatible with silver-containing preparations. Antagonized by PABA. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
Ocular irritation, secondary infections; rarely: severe sulfonamide sensitivity reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, fever, bone marrow depression, lupus). In prolonged use: increased IOP, cataracts, corneal perforations, optic nerve damage. May mask signs of infection or retard corneal healing. |
