Indications
Ocular inflammation with infection.
Adults and Children
<6 years: not recommended. ≥6 years: 2 drops every 4 hours and at bedtime or small amount of ointment 3–4 times daily and 1–2 times at night. May prolong dosing interval as condition improves; max 20 mL or 8 g per therapeutic course.
Contraindications
Ocular fungal, viral, or mycobacterial infections.
Precautions
Corneal or scleral thinning. Glaucoma. Myopia. Diabetes. Purulent exudates may inactivate sulfonamides. Monitor for secondary infections and intraocular pressure in prolonged use. Avoid abrupt cessation. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers: not recommended.
Interactions
Incompatible with silver-containing preparations. Antagonized by PABA.
Adverse Reactions
Ocular irritation, secondary infections; rarely: severe sulfonamide sensitivity reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, fever, bone marrow depression, lupus). In prolonged use: increased IOP, cataracts, corneal perforations, optic nerve damage. May mask signs of infection or retard corneal healing.
