Generic Name
Somatropin (rDNA origin) 4mg, 5mg, 6mg; per vial; for SC inj after reconstitution.
Indications
AIDS wasting or cachexia.
Children
Not recommended; see literature. 6–17yrs: doses of 0.04mg/kg or 0.07mg/kg per day have been used.
Adults
Give by SC inj once daily at bedtime. Rotate inj site. <35kg: 0.1mg/kg. 35–45kg: 4mg. 45–55kg: 5mg. >55kg: 6mg. Risk factors for adverse effects (eg, glucose intolerance): initially 0.1mg/kg every other day.
Precautions
Use only under guidance of a physician trained in AIDS management. Reevaluate if weight loss persists after 2 weeks of therapy. Do periodic funduscopic evaluation. Discontinue if carpal tunnel syndrome persists after dosage reduction. Glucose intolerance. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions
Musculoskeletal discomfort, increased tissue turgor, pancreatitis, others.
