Indications
Central (cranial) diabetes insipidus. Temporary polyuria and polydipsia following head trauma or surgery in the pituitary region.
Children
<4yrs: not recommended. ≥4yrs: initially 0.05mg once daily; individualize.
Adults
When switching to tabs give 1st oral dose 12 hours after last intranasal dose. Usual range: 0.1–1.2 mg/day in 2–3 divided doses.
Contraindications
Moderate-to-severe renal impairment (CrCl<50mL/min).
Precautions
Monitor fluid intake, urine volume and osmolality. Fluid/electrolye imbalance (eg, cystic fibrosis). Coronary artery insufficiency. Hypertension. Nasal mucosal changes (nasal forms). Repeated administration of injectable before 48 hrs associated with tachyphylaxis. Very young. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Caution with other pressor agents.
Adverse Reactions
Nasal congestion or rhinitis (nasal forms), headache, nausea, flushing, abdominal cramps, water intoxication, hyponatremia, changes in blood pressure; seizures in children from plasma hypoosmolality (rare).
