| Indications |
|
Female test: determination of follicle-stimulating hormone (indicator of ovarian reserve) in urine. Male test: determination of the concentration of motile sperm (indicator of sperm quality) in semen. |

Follow test instructions exactly. Female: uses lateral flow dipstick: test 1st urine on day 3 of menstrual cycle. Results in 30 mins (no test line or test line lighter than reference line: likely to be normal FSH level; test line same or darker than reference line: further testing may be required). Male: uses controlled chamber with hyaluronic acid soln: test ≥2 days but <7 days from prior ejaculation. Results in 80 mins (1 red line: concentration of motile sperm below cut-off level; 2 red lines: concentration of motile sperm above cut-off level). |
| Precautions |
|
Tests do not detect all causes of infertility. Not for patients undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. Women previously on oral contraceptives, may use test after 2 normal menstrual cycles. Cannot be used to time ovulation. Do not test semen sample produced in condom. |
| Interactions |
|
Oral or transdermal contraceptives may inhibit FSH levels. Lubricants, soap or petroleum jelly may affect sperm and interfere with results. |
