| Indications |
|
Rapid control of severe psychotic symptoms. Severe childhood behavior disorders. Adjunct in tetanus. |
| Children |
|
<6months: not recommended. ≥6months: Severe behavior disorders: 0.25mg/lb IM every 6–8 hrs if needed. Tetanus: 0.25mg/lb IM or IV (see literature) every 6–8 hrs. Both: <5yrs or <50lbs: max 40mg/day; ≥5yrs or 50–100lbs: usual max 75mg/day. |

|
Psychosis: 25mg IM; may repeat in 1 hour, then switch to oral or rectal forms. Tetanus: 25–50mg IM 3–4 times daily or 25–50mg IV (see literature). |
| Contraindications |
|
Coma. CNS or bone marrow depression. Reye's syndrome. |
| Precautions |
|
Discontinue 48 hrs before to 24 hrs after myelography. Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, or liver disease. Epilepsy. Glaucoma. History of breast cancer. Exposure to extreme heat or organophosphates. Asthma (inj). Monitor blood, liver, and ocular function. Elderly. Pregnancy, nursing mothers: not recommended. |
| Interactions |
|
Potentiates phenytoin, alcohol, other CNS depressants, propranolol. Potentiated by propranolol. Antagonized by anticholinergics. Atropine. Decreased guanethidine, anticoagulant effects. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
Tardive dyskinesia, drowsiness, jaundice, blood dyscrasias, hypotension, retinopathy, may mask emetic signs of disease, lowered seizure threshold, rash, skin pigmentation, anticholinergic effects, insomnia, extrapyramidal reactions, neuroleptic malignant syndrome. |
