Parkinsonism. |

Not recommended. |
| Adults |
|
Take with food. Initially 1.25mg twice daily. May increase every 2–4 weeks by 2.5mg/day; max 100mg/day. Maintain levodopa dose at first. |
| Contraindications |
|
Parkinsonism refractory to levodopa. Uncontrolled hypertension. Hypertension of pregnancy. Postpartum lactation. Other ergots. |
| Precautions |
|
Dementia. MI. Arrhythmias. Renal or hepatic disease. Raynaud's syndrome. Discontinue if hypertension, severe headache, or CNS toxicity occurs. Psychosis. Peptic ulcer. GI bleed. Monitor hepatic, cardiovascular, renal function, BP, blood counts. Post-partum use if history of severe cardiovascular disease (eg, coronary artery disease). Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers: not recommended. |
| Interactions |
|
See Contraindications. Avoid phenothiazines, alcohol. Potentiates antihypertensives. Caution with dopamine antagonists, butyrophenones, drugs that affect BP. Antagonized by phenothiazines, haloperidol, metoclopramide, pimozide. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
GI upset, involuntary movements, hallucinations, confusion, on-off phenomenon, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, syncope, asthenia, visual disturbances, ataxia, hypotension; rarely: hypertension, seizure, stroke, MI. |
