10mg at bedtime (take only if able to get 7–8 hours of sleep before becoming active again). Elderly, debilitated, or hepatic insufficiency: initially 5mg at bedtime; max 10mg. Reevaluate after 2–3 wks. Max 1 month/Rx. Effect delayed if taken with a meal. |

Depression. Behavioral changes. Compromised respiratory function. Conditions that affect metabolism or hemodynamic response. Drug or alcohol abuse. Write Rx for smallest practical amount. Withdraw gradually. Elderly. Debilitated. Labor & delivery. Pregnancy (Cat.C for Ambien CR, Cat.B for Ambien). Nursing mothers: not recommended. |
| Interactions |
|
May potentiate CNS depression with alcohol, other CNS depressants. May be potentiated by CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, itraconazole). May be antagonized by flumazenil, CYP3A4 inducers (eg, rifampin). |

CNS effects, complex sleep-related behaviors (eg, sleep-driving), headache, GI upset, dry mouth; anaphylaxis, angioedema, others (see literature). |
