α1-blocker (quinazoline).
Generic Name
Terazosin (as HCl) 1mg, 2mg, 5mg, 10mg; caps.
Indications
Hypertension.
Children
Not recommended.
Adults
1 mg at bedtime, then increase slowly. Usually: 1–5 mg once daily in the AM; max 20 mg/day. Monitor at peak (2–3 hours after dose) and trough. If BP response is substantially diminished at 24 hours, may increase dose or give in 2 divided doses. If hypotensive effects occur at peak, consider twice daily dosing. If another antihypertensive is added, dosage reduction and retitration may be necessary.
Precautions
Syncope. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.
Interactions
Caution with verapamil, other antihypertensives.
Adverse Reactions
Syncope (esp. 1st dose), dizziness, somnolence, asthenia, nausea, nasal congestion, palpitations, orthostatic hypotension, blurred vision, peripheral edema; priapism (rare).
