5g–30g daily once or in divided doses mixed with liquid. |
| Precautions |
|
Obtain baseline serum cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides, and monitor during therapy. May need Vit. A, D and K supplementation with long-term therapy. Exclude secondary causes of hypercholesterolemia (e.g., hypothyroidism, diabetes, nephrotic syndrome, dysproteinemias, obstructive liver disease, alcoholism). Constipation. Hemorrhoids. Pregnancy. Nursing mothers. |
| Interactions |
|
Reduces absorption of thiazides, furosemide, tetracycline, penicillin G, gemfibrozil, others; monitor digitalis, propranolol; give other drugs at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after. |
| Adverse Reactions |
|
Constipation, fecal impaction, aggravated hemorrhoids, GI upset, Vit. A, D, K deficiencies with prolonged use. |
