Pharmacological Class
Sympathomimetic.
Generic Name
Epinephrine (as HCl) 1mg/mL; inj; contains sulfites.
Indications
Emergency treatment in anaphylaxis. Bronchospasm. Urticaria. Angioedema. Serum sickness.
Children
0.01mg/kg (max 0.5mg) SC every 4 hrs as needed.
Adults
0.2–1mg SC (preferred) or IM (avoid buttocks) every 4 hrs as needed.
Contraindications
Narrow angle glaucoma. Cardiac failure. Shock. Organic brain damage. Cardiac dilatation. Coronary insufficiency. General anesthesia with cyclopropane or halogenated hydrocarbons. Local anesthesia of fingers, toes. Labor.
Precautions
Cardiovascular disease. Hypertension. Diabetes. Hyperthyroidism. Psychoneurosis. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.C).
Interactions
Pressor effects may be potentiated by tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, levothyroxine, β-blockers, guanethidine. May be antagonized by nitrites, α-blockers. Avoid digitalis and other arrhythmia-producing agents.
Adverse Reactions
Anxiety, headache, fear, palpitations, local necrosis, pulmonary edema, hypertension, cerebral hemorrhage.
